A Gentle Framework for Home, Learning, & Life.
The Cottagestead Way
The Cottagestead Way is not a system to master, but a rhythm of life to return to. It is a quiet reclaiming of home at the center learning, nourishment, and beauty. Here, education is not separated from life, but rather woven into bread making, book reading, and the tending of both gardens and little hearts.
There are four pillars of our Cottagestead CM Education —
01
Living Books & Classical Literature
02
Cottage Rhythms & Slow Living
03
Homestead Nature Study
04
Faith Foundation & Character Building
Charlotte Mason —
First, let us explain what the Charlotte Mason style of home education is if you've never heard of her or her homeschooling concept before.
Charlotte Mason homeschooling is a child-centered and literature based approach to education. Where the focus is educating the whole person, through shorter lessons, narrative driven “living books”, nature study, copy work, and habit development.
The main goal is to foster a love for learning over sheer memorization for test taking or essay writing, with narrations being used as a way to check comprehension.
Now let's break down the differences so you can understand them better:
LIVING BOOKS — Living books are high quality books with engaging, narrative literature used for learning over large and dry textbooks that just list facts.
NARRATION — Narration is where children verbally “tell back” what they just learned to help them process the information. Older years may write down their narrations over giving them orally.
SHORT LESSONS — Each lesson is only 10-20 minutes long which allows for higher attention spans and hitting multiple subjects without a child burning out or having too much to process for the day.
NATURE STUDY — Nature study is a natural science program which just involves a child spending time outdoors with a notebook and art supplies, allowing them to take in their scenery and learning about it.
COPYWORK — Copywork is a natural learning tool where a child will learn spelling, grammar and handwriting through the simple act of copying down picked out literature or Bible passages.
HABIT DEVELOPMENT — Intentionally cultivating and training daily habits like obedience, truthfulness and attentiveness through schooling and daily life.
The Four Pillars -
The four pillars to our style framework that we call The Cottagestead Way, is basically taking Charlotte Mason's home education approach and tweaking it to a slow and deeply rooted way of life. We simplified her approach but kept everything enriching about it.
Let us know explore each pillar & what it will bring to your homeschool education:
-
Classic stories that shape virtue, wonder and wisdom in each child. We do not include “modern fluff” that distracts and purely entertains the child.
-
Our cottage rhythms are simple and gentle routines, seasonal celebrations, encouraging homemaking skills and utilizing the home as the classroom.
-
Instead of focusing on the broader and more common areas of “science” study, we focus on real life, holistic sciences with purpose like gardening, animal and animal care, weather, soil, herbs and even chores.
-
Encouraging making faith a main part of your homeschool and home life to help build a child's character through Scripture, hymns, moral tales, service, gratitude and stewardship.
